Rebuilding a Worn Smile

Teeth do wear over time. This may lead to loss of support for the face, lips and cheeks causing a shorter or closed look to your face. Ultimately this results in a ”nose-to-chin” look with increased wrinkles and creases at the corners of your mouth, associated with old age.

Worn teeth cause a problem not only for your appearance and your smile: it can also lead to jaw joint and muscle problems as well as tooth nerve inflammation resulting in headaches, sensitivity and even the tooth dying.

The corners of your mouth turn down and uneven tooth wear causes a “reverse smile” or an unhappy look! We offer effective solutions for stopping tooth wear and rebuilding worn teeth. By restoring face height we restore your appearance, even remove wrinkles due to the closed down look; perhaps a more youthful look without plastic surgery!

Teeth wear by 3 main processes. Grinding or clenching (bruxism) results in biting surface chipping away. Habits such as overly vigorous interdental or tooth brushing will wear down the sides of teeth. Acidic foods and drinks will erode tooth surfaces, usually on the inside surface of your teeth. For problems due to acidity or home care habits, our Hygiene department is skilled in how to stop damage.

Grinding and bruxism may be caused by stress or bite problems. Stress typically results in night bruxism. We can advise on techniques to control these problems. To protect the teeth, jaw and joints, a night guard may be the best solution. We recommend NTI guards, which cover the front central teeth only, resulting in proprioceptive control of guarding problems without the bulkiness of other guards. This makes the NTI guard more comfortable.

To rebuild worn teeth, we firstly correct the way the top and bottom jaws meet, as well as addressing the muscles that control them. Otherwise any build-ups will wear or just chip again. This is especially true if you have more wear on the front teeth than the molars (posturing problems).

We offer long term solutions. We take the time to listen to what you want for your smile and your teeth. The shape and length of tooth suited to your face and your lifestyle choices can then be established. We offer you a diagnostic rebuild to show you how your new teeth will look. It allows us to establish how to achieve the best results for you. We establish a protected bite and correct occlusal irregularities to protect you from more wear. We are skilled in the many techniques available for restoring worn teeth and to address jaw and muscle irregularities. We consider your lifestyle and wants and provide solutions for you. We base our recommendations on our Comprehensive exam.

Often we employ bonding to improve the height of teeth for a better bite. We may recommend veneers as a great cosmetic solution. For very worn teeth that are used for chewing, strong crowns are a choice we consider. If missing teeth or gaps are part of your dentition, our skills in implants or bridges may be needed.

We use our expertise to ensure the best options are part of an overall treatment plan. We present this plan to you for your consideration. Costs and benefits for your lifestyle are included and of course you are able to ask any questions you have. To achieve what you want for your smile, your health and function is our goal.
